The rapid change in North American HVAC and sheet metal contracting industries will drive many factors, including economic shifts, labor availability, technological advancement, and more. SMACNA’s New Horizons Foundation’s 2022 Futures Study addresses these factors and more, providing a broad perspective on developing trends impacting the HVAC, sheet metal, and mechanical sectors. This session will address the findings of the fourth and latest Futures Study and what contractors can use to make their operations more efficient.


  • Angie Simon

    Western Allied Mechanical 

    Angie has been a leader in the Bay Area construction industry for many years. Starting as a young 22-year-old project manager in the late 80’s when there were very few women in construction to becoming the president/CEO of a $100 Million Mechanical contracting firm (Western Allied Mechanical) with over 300 people. She has a reputation in the Bay Area as a strong businesswoman, an excellent engineer, and an advocate for all women in construction as well as encouraging youth to enter our trades. She was the first ever female National President of SMACNA from 2019 to 2021, formed a Women in Construction leadership Committee Nationally and local for SMACNA and Co-founded Heavy Metal Summer Experience

  • Guy Gast

    The Waldinger Corporation

    Guy Gast is the past President of The Waldinger Corporation – Iowa Division. From 2015-2016, he served nationally as President of SMACNA, representing 3500 contractors in North America. For over a decade, he has been both a contributor to and Chair of the New Horizons Foundation. In December 2020, SMACNA honored him as the recipient of the 2020 Contractor of the Year award. He served as the chair of the task force which guided the 2022 Futures Study for NHF.
